OVERVIEW

One of California’s busiest airports and a major gateway to Europe and Asia, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) comprises four terminals: 1, 2, 3, and International. This guide is for Terminal 1, also known as Harvey Milk Terminal 1, one of the three domestic terminals. It is the departure and arrival terminal for flights by American Airlines, Southwest, and JetBlue.

Here’s our full guide to SFO Terminal 1, with advice on dining, shopping, relaxing, and more.

WHERE CAN I EAT & DRINK AT SFO TERMINAL 1?

There are lots of excellent dining and drinking options in San Francisco Airport’s Terminal 1.

San Fran favorite The Little Chihuahua serves tasty Mexican food, while Bun Mee is sure to scratch that pho itch. There’s also fine Filipino fare from Goldilocks, divine crispy Californian chicken at Starbird, and yummy organic and vegetarian snacks at Amy's Drive Thru. Want a quick snack? Grab a burger and fries at Drake’s Flyaway, or a sandwich at Bistrot Bay Area.

TRY THIS! Amy’s Broccoli Cheddar Mac n’ Cheese is veggie comfort food on a budget.

WHAT CAN I BUY AT SFO TERMINAL 1?

Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport isn’t exactly a shopper’s paradise, but there are a few decent retail options. For example, you can pamper yourself with the beauty and fragrance products at L'Occitane, pick up a new pair of vacation shades at NYS Eyewear, and browse all the latest tech (including Apple branded products) at the iStore. There are also some Terminal 1 outlets selling gifts, souvenirs, snacks, and sundries.

WHERE CAN I RELAX AT SFO TERMINAL 1?

The main airport lounge in Terminal 1 of San Francisco International Airport is the American Airlines Admirals Club. It’s open to club members for free, as well as to anybody flying on American Airlines (or on other oneworld® airlines, like British Airways and Qatar Airways) for $59 a day. The lounge has free Wi-Fi, workstations, and hotspot printing as well a choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There’s also a USO Lounge for military personnel.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO AT SFO TERMINAL 1?

The SFO Museum has a rotating series of exhibitions in the airport, covering everything from antique scientific instruments to American football (particularly the 49ers!) A stroll around SFO Terminal 1 reveals an eclectic collection of art, with original pieces around every corner.

Those with young children will also appreciate the themed play area Kids' Spot Tree Town.

DEPARTING FROM SFO TERMINAL

Terminal 1 stretches out like a finger to the southeast of the airport building. Departures are on Level 2. Enter through the B Security Checkpoint, after which you will find the departure gates, along with restaurants, cafes, shops, and the American Airlines Admirals Club lounge.

There are 26 departure gates in total, which are numbered from B2 to B27. The closest three gates, B2 to B4, are just a two-minute walk from the B Security Checkpoint. The farthest gates, B19 to B27, are at the south end of the terminal; allow a 10-minute walk from security.

For Terminal 1 domestic flights, most airlines suggest arriving two hours prior to departure.

ARRIVING AT SFO TERMINAL

There are no customs checks for domestic flights, so once you arrive into SFO Terminal 1 you can head directly to baggage claim on Level 1. There are five baggage carousels, so look for the one with the screen showing your flight details. There are also restrooms here. Once you have your baggage - or if you’ve no baggage to collect - you can head for the exit.
